For many of us on the path to spiritual awakening, we come to realise that we are not alone on our journey. We have, in the spiritual realm, a group of spiritual beings to help and guide us. This “spirit team” – is a collection of benevolent energies, including spirit guides, guardian angels, and your higher self that support, protect and guide us through our earthly experience.
Understanding Your Spirit Team

- Having never been in human form
- Serving as protective presences
- Offering unconditional love and support
- Intervening in moments of danger or significant life events

All of these spiritual entities are available to help, support and guide us in different ways. While they are always around us and looking out for us, when we connect with them, we can more easily access their guidance and support. Here are some ways to build and strengthen this connection
Creating Sacred Space
When connecting with your spirit team it can be helpful to create a sacred space. This can help us to step away form the ordinary world and focus on the spiritual realm. It can also help to keep us safe as we open up to spiritual energies. Begin by designating a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. You may like to:
- Clear the energy with practices like burning incense, or using sound (bells, singing bowls)
- Focus on meaningful objects that inspire spiritual connection (crystals, religious symbols, photographs of loved ones)
- Get comfortable with cushions, blankets, or supportive seating
- Dim harsh lights and use candles for a softer atmosphere
Centring Yourself
Before attempting to connect with your spirit team, it’s a good idea to centre yourself. This can ensure you release any worries or distractions and help you to focus on creating a connection.
- Begin by taking several deep, conscious breaths, allowing your body to relax with each exhale
- Scan your body for tension and consciously release it
- Set an intention for your practice such as connection, clarity, guidance, healing, etc.
- Release expectations about how the connection “should” feel or manifest
Practices for Connecting With Your Spirit Team
There are many ways to connect to your spiritual team. You can choose whichever resonates with you most. Feel free to try out a few suggestions and find which works best for you. You might also like to use different methods depending on what you want to receive. For example, meditation is great for sensing your team around you while journaling often works well when you are looking for answers to specific questions.
You can choose who you want to connect with, too. For example, if you don’t want to work with spiritual entities you can simply connect with your Higher Self or your Inner Child.
1. Meditation for Initial Contact
This simple meditation can help establish contact with your spiritual team.
- Find a comfortable seated position and close your eyes
- Take 10 deep, slow breaths to centre yourself
- Visualise yourself surrounded by a protective sphere of golden or white light
- State silently or aloud: “I now invite my spirit guides, guardian angels, and higher self to connect with me. I ask that only beings of the highest light and love who serve my greatest good come forward.”
- Remain in receptive awareness, noticing any sensations, feelings, thoughts, or impressions

You may notice some signs that you have made a connection, which I have listed below. If you don’t feel anything the first time, don’t worry. Sometimes it takes a bit of practice to get into a state where you are open to the connection.
- A sense of presence or being watched over
- Temperature changes (warmth, coolness)
- Tingling sensations, especially around the crown, shoulders, or hands
- Emotional shifts (sudden peace, joy, or love)
- Fleeting images or symbols in your mind’s eye
2. Journaling for Spiritual Dialogue
Writing can be a powerful tool for communication with your spiritual team. I find writing can be particularly helpful when I am struggling to know what direction to take or I need guidance on a specific issue. However, don’t be surprised if the information you receive doesn’t immediately seem related to your problem. Your spirit guides can see the bigger picture and may know better than you what you need to know right now.
- Begin each session by writing your intention at the top of the page: “I am open to guidance from my spirit guides, guardian angels and higher self.”
- Ask a specific question
- Allow your hand to write without censoring or judging what comes through
- Notice when the writing feels different – perhaps flowing more easily or using phrases that aren’t typical for you
- Review what you’ve written afterwards, highlighting anything that provides insight
