Sigil magic is a simple yet powerful form of magic that is accessible to all witches. Sigils carry the energy of the individual who created them, making them a powerful magic practice for empowerment and transformation. The simplicity and accessibility of sigil magic make it a popular choice for modern practitioners, especially for those who may be limited by space, resources, or the need for secrecy in their practice.

Sigil magic is founded on the belief that symbols can create a connection with the subconscious mind and the universe at large. The creation of a sigil is a symbolic action which translates your desires or intentions into a visual form. The sigil serves as a focal point for your energy and intention, acting as a channel to manifest your desires into reality.
While the exact origins of sigil magic are difficult to trace due to its widespread use across different cultures and time periods, we can identify several key influences and developments that have shaped its history.
A brief history of sigil magic
Ancient Cultures
The use of symbols and talismans to invoke supernatural powers and protect against harm can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece and Mesopotamia. These early practices laid the groundwork for the use of symbols in magical rituals and ceremonies.
Medieval and Renaissance Magic
During the medieval and Renaissance periods, occult practices and magical traditions flourished, with grimoires and magical texts being produced that included various sigils, seals and symbols. These texts, such as the “Key of Solomon” and the works of Cornelius Agrippa, provided instructions on creating and using sigils for various magical purposes.
19th and 20th Century Occult Revival
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a revival of interest in occultism and magical practices, fueled by the works of prominent figures such as Aleister Crowley, Austin Osman Spare and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. These individuals and organisations contributed to the development and popularisation of modern magical systems, including the use of sigils in ritual magic.
Chaos Magic
In the late 20th century, chaos magic emerged as a modern magical movement that emphasised experimentation, personal experience and the use of eclectic and adaptable techniques. Austin Osman Spare’s work on sigil magic became a foundational practice within chaos magic, inspiring practitioners to explore new ways of creating and using sigils in their magical work.
Sigils and chaos magic
In chaos magic, sigils are often used as a versatile and effective tool for casting spells or manifesting desires. The process of creating and charging sigils in chaos magic is typically derived from the work of Austin Osman Spare, a British artist and occultist. Chaos magic sigils are seen as tools for hacking reality, reshaping perceptions, and exploring the boundaries of consciousness and belief. Here’s a simple explanation of how chaos magic sigils work.
Desire and Statement of Intent
Begin by identifying a specific desire or intention you wish to manifest. Formulate this desire into a clear and concise statement.
Creation of the Sigil
Transform the statement of intent into a visual symbol by removing all vowels and repeating letters from the statement. The remaining consonants are then combined and rearranged to create a unique and abstract design.
Charging the Sigil
Once the sigil is created, it needs to be charged with energy to activate its magical properties. This can be done through various methods, such as meditation, visualization, or even sexual energy, depending on the practitioner’s preference.
Activation and Release
After charging the sigil, it is released into the universe to do its work. This can be done by focusing on the sigil, visualising its energy being released, and then forgetting about it to allow the subconscious mind and the universe to work on manifesting the desire.
It’s important to note that chaos magic encourages experimentation and personalisation, so practitioners may adapt or modify these steps to suit their own beliefs and practices.
While the above offers a basic outline of how to create a chaos magic sigil, there are various other ways to create and use magic sigils.
How to create your own sigil
In this section, we will look at various ways to create, charge and release your sigil.
First, spend some time working out what you want to manifest. Sit quietly for a while and think about what you want to bring into your life or what goals or feeling you want to achieve. Once you have decided write down your intention as simply as possible. For example, I am creative, I am wealthy, I have an abundance of self-love, I am fit and healthy, I am loved, or I am successful in my career.
Now cross out all the vowels and repeated letters in your intention. For example, if you cross out the vowels and repeated letters in the words ‘self-love’ you are left with the letters slfv. For ‘l am healthy’ you would be left with mhlty.
Now combine these letters in any way you choose to form a symbol. This is your sigil.
An alternative way to create a sigil is to use the ‘wheel’ method. You can find out more about this method here.
Once you have created your sigil you can use it in a variety of different ways. You can write it on your body with a permanent marker or waterproof eyeliner pen, you can draw it into food and then eat it, or, as is most common, write it onto paper
Next, you need to charge your sigil. I like to place my sigil in front of a candle or LED candle, relax my shoulders and sit and gaze at it for a few minutes with a soft focus while breathing slowly and imagining my energy going into the sigil. However, you can also chant or sing or dance around your sigil. Do whatever feels right to you.
Once you have charged your sigil there are a few options for activating and releasing the energy depending on whether you want to ‘set it and forget it’ or you wish to create a more long-term focus for your manifestation.
Suppose you want to use the ‘set it and forget it’ method. In that case, you can simply visualise the energy being released into the universe while symbolically burning, burying or shredding the sigil. Alternatively, you can visualise the energy being released and then hide the sigil.
A second option is to keep the sigil for a while so you can look at it and renew your intention regularly. You can leave it on your altar or somewhere you will see it every day, or even use it as a bookmark. Try different methods for different intentions and see which works best for you.
Sigil Magic Ritual for guidance on your magical journey
What you need
Pen and paper. You may also like to use a candle, incense or oil burner. If you want to burn your sigil you will need a flameproof dish or a safe outside space.
What to do
Cleanse your space and sit down with a pen and a piece of paper. You can take a few breaths, meditate or just sit quietly for a few moments. You can also light a candle or LED candle, incense or oil burner if you like or play some relaxing sounds or instrumental music.
Write down your intention, such as ‘I would like guidance on my magical journey’. Then simplify this by, for example, just writing the words ‘magical guidance’ or simply ‘guidance’. Next, cross out the vowels and repeated letters. If you have used the word guidance this will leave you with gdnc. Combine these letters in any way you choose to form your sigil.
Now, take some time to charge your sigil in one of the ways mentioned above, such as with meditation, repeating your intention or chanting.
Once you feel your sigil is charged, you can focus on releasing the energy using visualisation or by burning the sigil.
Lastly, choose how to finish your sigil magic ritual. If you have burned the sigil you are done, if not, hide or bury the sigil if you wish to use the ‘set it and forget it’ method, or place it on your altar if you wish to focus on it for a while longer (you can burn it or hide it at a later date).
